I believe parents want to connect compassionately with their children in ways that nurture love, trust and autonomy even in difficult moments. But many of us become disheartened when we see ourselves repeating patterns and ways of thinking we inherited from our past. Based on the principles of Nonviolent Communication this course will offer you an opportunity to reflect on your parenting within a nurturing environment.

Outline of the Course

I believe parents want to connect compassionately with their children in ways that nurture love, trust and autonomy even in difficult moments. But many of us become disheartened when we see ourselves repeating patterns and ways of thinking we inherited from our past.  Based on the principles of Nonviolent Communication this course will offer you an opportunity to reflect on your parenting within a nurturing environment.

Session 1: What’s it all about? This session will offer an opportunity to:

• Begin the process of building together a compassionate learning space for us all, as a group, to come together in
• Explore briefly some of the principles and practice of compassionate parenting
• Connect with the values you want to live by
• Make sense of your children’s behaviour and your own through the lens of compassionate parenting
Session 2: Taking care of myself first. This session will offer an opportunity to:

• Shift judgment and blame of yourself towards finding and sustaining a place of calm within
• Look into and understand from a compassionate parenting perspective, why you might react to your children the way you do particularly when they say “No!”

Session 3. What’s really going on for our children when they are experiencing BIG emotions? This session will offer an opportunity to:

• Explore what’s going on for children emotionally, particularly in challenging situations
• Identify and look into your own habitual responses to children’s behaviour which can diminish the very values many parents want to live by
• Develop the qualities of empathic listening

Session 4 & 5: So what on earth do I do? This session will offer an opportunity to:

• Develop the skills to express yourself honestly in ways you are more likely to be heard
• Work towards joint solution finding which balance our needs with our children’s needs
• Consider and explore setting and enforcing loving boundaries, and when to use
Session 6: Appreciating our children’s gifts without using praise or rewards. This session will offer an opportunity to:

• Look at why praise and rewards diminish intrinsic motivation
• Find out how we can express appreciation that respects and protects children’s autonomy
• Reflect and celebrate our time together

The course is built on the principles of Nonviolent Communication developed by Dr Marshall Rosenberg.
